February 2010 - Recent Brigade News in Brief

On Wednesday 6th January 2010 the Brigade was asked by HM Coastguard whether they would be willing to assist the North East Ambulance Service who were having difficulties in attending a number of emergency calls due to the adverse weather conditions in the Newcastle and Gateshead area. This had been caused by a week of heavy snow and icy conditions which had made Gateshead a particularly difficult area to navigate around in a vehicle.

Three Brigade members spent 9 hours on call for the Ambulance Service and attended four incidents - one of which involved transporting a heavily-pregnant 31 year-old female from her house in the Bensham area of Gateshead to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

When the Brigade first arrived at the lady's house, the plan was just to transport her the 100 yards from her home to an ambulance which was unable to make it quite to her front door. However, the midwife decided that no time could be wasted and so the Brigade transported the heavily pregnant lady, her husband and the midwife to the hospital which was 10 minutes away. Thanks to some skilful driving from Captain Michael and some calming words from Peter, the expectant mother arrived at hospital just in time and a short while later baby Monty Carr was born!

Baby Monty, who weighed in at an impressive 9lb 15oz.

Normally the Brigade would not have found out the result of this story but, thanks to Jill at Tynemouth RNLI who is friends with the parents, we have been able to here that all went well and have received the cute photographs of Monty and his parents Rob and Claire.

The Brigade wishes the family good health and best wishes for the future.
