Cliff Rescue Demonstration at Cullercoats Harbour Day 2006

The following set of pictures show the T.V.L.B. carrying out a cliff rescue demonstration at Cullercoats Harbour Day 2006. The situation involved two Brigade members descending down a cliff and being recovered from the bottom of the cliff by Cullercoats RNLI Inshore Lifeboat. This is excellent practice for the Brigade and the Lifeboat as in a cliff rescue every attempt would be made to recover a casualty from the bottom of a cliff as apposed to recovering them to the top of the cliffs. While the Brigade is trained and capable of recovering a casualty to the top of a cliff, it is generally safer and more practical to recover someone from the bottom of cliffs, whether by lifeboat or carrying them to an ambulance or the Brigade landrover.

Brigade members assess the scene before starting the cliff exercise.

The Lifeboat comes in toward the bottom of the cliff. The Lifeboat deploys it anchor at this point to allow itself more control should there be any large seas or strong currents in the area.
Once at the bottom of the cliff John detaches himself from the line.
John then prepares to climb into the Lifeboat and be recovered to the mainland.
