Report of a Chemical Spill at Whitley Bay Beach
HM Coastguard paged the Brigade after a 999 call reported a canister leaking a substance on to the beach at Whitley Bay. The Brigade was first on scene and immediately cordoned off the beach with a perimeter of 300 metres. The Brigade Back Up Reponse Team was called in and team members assisted in securing the cordoned off area and also did a full search of the Beach for any other containers similar to the one causing concern. 8 Fire Brigade units arrived on scene and wearing contamination suits approached the canister and sealed it in a larger container. They then de-contaminated the area and themselves before handing the area back into the control of the Brigade. A Brigade member, also an employee of North Tyneside Council, then arranged for a council vehicle to attend the scene and with the help of the Brigade the canister was placed in the vehicle and taken away for analysis and disposal. Members of the ambulance service and police community support officers were also on scene.
