Rescue and recovery of a Speed Boat and its crew which capsized off Tynemouth Longsands
HM Coastguard paged the Brigade after receiving a report of a jet ski hitting the rocks at the north end of Tynemouth Long Sands, putting a number of persons into the sea. Team members immediately rushed to the scene, including three who left the wedding celebration of a fellow Brigade member which was taking place at our watch house. (The Groom made the sensible decision, as a good number of fellow team members were available to deal with the incident, to stay at the wedding!). Once on scene they discovered that a 14ft power boat had in fact overturned placing her four crew into the sea, and although all four had reached the shore, they were extremely hypothermic. The team land rover was used to transport the four crew to Cullercoats RNLI station where they were cared for and slowly warmed up. However, the decision was made that two of the four required further assistance and were taken to a local hospital. Cullercoats RNLI managed to tow the boat back to Cullercoats Bay where it was recovered onto its trailer. Two days later the rescuers involved met back up with the four lads as they came to recover the boat and it was pleasing to see that all four had made a full recovery. However, they were also issued with safety advice as they had no lifejackets, flares or radio on their powerboat, which could have assisted in their rescue.
