Administration of first-aid and recovery to ambulance of pier jumper at Cullercoats Bay
While on a local area patrol, the brigade overheard a Cullercoats Bay Lifeguard report a male staggering ashore on the south end of their beach and requiring immediate assistance. The brigade patrol team attended and two brigade members along with a lifeguard cared for the casualty who had suffered suspected spinal injuries. Meanwhile, two other brigade members readied the brigade equipment to be used in the casualty's extraction and communicated with HM Coastguard to arrange an ambulance to attend the incident. At 16.20 the casualty was placed onto a Brigade spinal board and transported to Hospital. It later transpired that the man, who had consumed a large amount of alcohol, had jumped from the South pier at Cullercoats Bay and sustained serious internal and possible spinal injuries on impact with the ground. While Pier Jumping is an enjoyable sport for many people in Cullercoats Bay, this incident highlights the extreme dangers it poses especially, as demonstrated in this case, when it is done at low tide and alcoholic substances have been consumed.
