Rescue of a young male stuck on the sea wall at Cullercoats Bay

HM Coastguard paged team members after a request from North Tyneside Council Beach Lifeguards who had spotted a young male hanging on to a cliff wall just north of their station at Cullercoats Bay. The 15 year old man, who had been jumping off the sea wall behind the Queens Head Pub, had become exhausted and did not have enough strength to reach safety and, with the tide in, Cullercoats RNLI Inshore Lifeboat were unable to safely reach the casualty. A Brigade section leader, wearing cliff rescue equipment, was lowered down the 50ft sea wall till he reached the casualty whom he safely secured to his harness. The pair were then carefully winched back up the sea wall using the winch on the front of the Brigade landrover and monitored at all times by 7 Brigade members. Once at the top of the wall the young male was checked for any injuries, and, once deemed fit and well, was allowed to leave the scene.

Brigade member Richard secures the casualty as Cullercoats RNLI standby as safety cover.
